Most have figured out a way to trick the proximity sensor; wall, gum, tape, clothespin, or my favorite prox trigger... a cleverly folded piece of paper.
But there's a better way still!
iPhones IOS has an accessibility feature built in called "Assistive Touch" and there's an app that mimics it for android called "Easy Touch" I don't have android so I'm not sure how well that works.
I do have an iPhone and it works 95% of the time. I was going to do a Beme on it but ... instead I made a quick little video on how I set it up and use it.
Here it is.
Have fun ... Beme on!

I couldn't find an app for Android that does this unfortunately There are ones that are similar, but not one that can be programmed like the one you show. Strange, you would think Android has a butt load of something like this. I'll search on, because I'd love to have this feature. I already wrote Beme that they should just add a "hands free" feature, where you just press the button and it records as it would when you cover the sensor. Also a bluetooth remote support would do wonders too.

I would LOVE it if you could set a timer ... an extra 5/10 seconds to get into position

Hey Guys, If anyone knows of an app that does this on Android please do share! None, unfortunately. Some of them also require root. I'll keep looking for a gesture recording app. It's predominantly a macro. Also, another great tip was given to me by jessecavalera (he really has a great eye for the artfulness and framing of a Beme/shot) was using a selfie stick and using the camera initially to frame. He also suggested adding a spot light.
